Book Review: Miracles and Conundrums of the Secondary Planets

Miracles and Conundrums of the Secondary PlanetsMiracles and Conundrums of the Secondary Planets by Jacob M. Appel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book has eight amazing short stories. I loved each one. The characters were rich, quirky and interesting.

I loved the first story about an alien from a different planet that has settled in Alabama. He claims to be from Latvia and spouts made up Latvian proverbs. It is great.

One story concerns a mother that is being forced to face her young daughters impending death. It is not maudlin, it is sweet and endearing.

The man who runs into his high school crush struggles with how exactly to treat her. It is a good story. I really liked William.

There are other stories and each one touched me In a special way. Some serious subjects were covered in the stories but they were handled with humor and compassion.

I won this book and agreed to give an honest review. I can honestly say I loved it. Jacob M Appel reminds me of Jack Finney. That great ability to bring characters to life.
I plan on reading more of his work.

Book Review: The Inscription

The InscriptionThe Inscription by Pam Binder
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonderful time travel

Amber McPhee is from Seattle and is spending time with her aunt Dora in Scotland. While on her way to a fair she crashes into Loch Ness.

Lachlan MacAlpin has been dreaming about a woman in the Loch for a while. He goes to the loch and while walking the shore he sees someone in the water. He swims to her and tries to bring her to shore.

Amber wakes to find the Scottish re-enactors all over the castle. She is unclear as to what has happened until she realizes she is in a castle that in the 1990’s is a ruin.

Time travel doesn’t seem real, but it us the only conclusion age can reach.

The author really makes the castle and the characters come to life. The struggle for Amber to adjust to the clothes and the rustic provisions are very much how I would feel in that situation.

Lachlan is a wonderful provider and caretaker for his family. He takes his responsibilities very seriously. He has worries about inheriting his Father’s worst trait.

Amber is such a gentle person. She is a good hard working woman that really has herself together. She was a pleasure to meet.

The secondary characters are as lively and interesting as the main. There is so much family intrigue and personality, that I found them to be a bonus.

I loved Gavin as well. He was the perfect character to add fun and heart to the story.

All in all I just loved this book. It kept me reading all night long.

Book Review: Dark Secret

Dark SecretDark Secret by Michelle Escamilla
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was provided this ARC book by the author. I stayed up late reading this book because I couldn’t sleep until I finished it. It was great. I loved Emma and her funny ways. Her relationship with Kyle is such a great friendship, they cracked me up with their antics.

When Micah first entered her life I could feel the sexual tension starting to build and it was great. Her dreams of Micah were so sexy and hot. She wanted to meet him again.

I wanted them to get together and find that extreme heat. There was something dark about Micah. He talked of the darkness and wanted Emma to embrace that darkness. That made me question him a bit. I wanted them to have it all and I still do.

But there was a concern he showed for her that seemed very tender.

The book had emotional highs and lows and Michelle really knows how to bring those emotions to life. The characters are amazingly real. You can feel the love between Kyle and Emma. They are perfect room mates and friends. They don’t pull any punches with each other.

The secrets that have been kept from Emma are terrible and easy to see why she would start having trust issues.

If you like well written characters and a rich plot then you will like this as much as I did. I can not wait for the next book. I hope it comes out soon as I have been left wanting to know what happens next.

Book Review: Love Me Sweet by Tracy Brogan

Love Me Sweet (Bell Harbor, #3)Love Me Sweet by Tracy Brogan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Delaney Masterson is part of a reality TV family. Her parents are famous and so everyone wants to know how they live their day to day life. Delaney’s ex from about 6 years back decides to release a sex tape that she never new existed.

Running from the press that has hounded her and accused her of releasing the tape herself for publicity. She ends up in Bell Harbor Michigan. Not only that but, she ends up in this northern town right as the polar vortex decided to rear it’s freezing head.

Renting a house to hide for the next little while she pays in cash to the landlady in order to keep her identity a secret. Signing her name on the rental agreement, it is misread as Elaine Masters, so she runs with it. It will be easy for her to use that name while hiding away. From this point she introduces herself with this name.

Grant Connelly has problems on the set of his own reality show and decides it is time to head back home. His brother is getting married and he feels it is time to go back to Michigan. Back to the house his Grandfather left him upon his death.

Grant and Delaney meet and find themselves thrown together by circumstances beyond their control. They decide to share the house in question for a while until they can sort out the details as to who belongs where.

With twists and turns that involve Delaney’s money being stolen and Grant’s mother going missing they set out for the south to intercept the money. Each time Grant asks questions, Delaney lies to keep him from finding out who she really is. She does not want to tell him about her family and her sex tape since he does not recognize her.

While driving in the snow they have an accident that sets them up to meet some very colorful characters. They continue to head south while the snow continues to fall. The polar vortex is dipping south bringing so much snow that travel is increasingly dangerous.

Spending time together while traveling means that Delaney thinks about coming clean to Grant and telling him the truth about her identity. She keeps letting little hiccups stop her from confessing. Arriving in Memphis, the couple has an opportunity to get to know one another even better while in a Elvis styled hotel. Their traveling companions bring so much comedy to the mix that the entire trip is a funny adventure.

The tension Delaney feels becomes palpable as they search for the missing money. With her lies and half truths she keeps delaying telling him who she is and fears his inevitable discovery.

This is a funny, interesting and exciting book. The characters are really fun and well developed. There is not a dull character in the book. Tracy Brogan really does bring characters and dialog to life.

I won this book and I am so glad that I did! It was an awesome book! There is so much more to this book that you just have to read to believe. It is hilarious!

Book Review: Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen

Earls Just Want to Have Fun (Covent Garden Cubs, #1)Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A 5 year old Elizabeth is kidnapped. 15 years later a Bow Street runner believes he has located her. After the runner Brooks and his brother Maxwell, Lord of Dane obtain the street urchin Marlowe ( possibly Lady Elizabeth). They take her to their home and send for her parents to confirm her identity.

Marlowe has had it very rough living as a thief on the streets of London. She has an often hilarious adjustment period at the Earl’s home. She doesn’t fare well in such a rich environment.

Marlowe and Maxwell struggle to survive their differences as they wait for her identity to be confirmed. Maxwell has never been around thieves and con artists and does not appreciate her being foisted upon him like this.

There are many twists and turns in this book which prove that everyone can learn something new from others. I found myself really liking both Lord Dane and Marlowe very much. Maxwell’s family is full of fun and interesting characters.

A wonderful book that touched my heart on many levels. I now want to read the others in this series.
