This last minute addition to the #ComedyBookWeek reviews features. This is a new Legal Comedy by Portia Porter. I was happy to have been given a copy for review. This is book 1 in the Family Court Series. If you can go by this first book, there is a lot of humor in the legal profession and in the courtrooms of South Duck.

Portia Porter has struck out on her own and landed her first big client: a millionaire many times over who needs a divorce. But as the billable hours and expenses mount, Portia is learning first hand how hard it is to get a client to pay if they don’t want to.
Will her tiny firm crumble under the weight of his unpaid bills? Or might the confusion and expense of switching lawyers be the leverage she needs to finally get paid?
With a biting wit, endearing characters, and a story that will leave you reeling, Beaver vs. Beaver is the quintessential legal comedy.
For law students, pre-law, young lawyers with a solo practice, and anybody who enjoys laughing at lawyers . . . I mean, legal comedy.
(a version of this story first appeared in “Can You Stiff Your Divorce Lawyer? Tales of How Cunning Clients Can Get Free Legal Work.”)
About the Author:
Portia Porter obtained her Ph.D. from The University of Chicago, a law degree from The University of Virginia, and practiced corporate and antitrust law with a top New York Wall Street law firm before opening her own divorce law practice. She practiced divorce law for about fifteen years before finally saying to herself: “You can’t divorce them all!”
If you have a divorce-related question that you are afraid to own up to, Portia is the one you should ask.
Portia lives in Ducklingburg, South Duck.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Beaver vs. Beaver is such an unusual book. The story follows a new attorney on her first Divorce case. Portia Porter is hired as the Husband’s lawyer. He basically just wants to come out of the marriage financially unscathed.Portia Porter has a very unique voice in her writing. She comes from the legal field and still she tells these stories in such a personable and fetching way
I never would have imagined that there could be such legal wrangling and underhanded maneuvering. This book had me laughing, feeling bad for Portia and her crack team, Raccoon and Hoppy, and shaking my head at what all she had to go through.
All this takes place in Ducklingburg, South Duck. There are accents, accusations, gossip mongers, and one Judge that I would not want to face.
The writing is so well done. In reading about this case you just know Portia wants to pull her hair out, but it might cost too much to repair. I kept laughing at the pictures she paints in this retelling of the events. Some of the events are just so funny and kind of mean spirited. I know I did not like opposing counsel.
Each character in this story is richly described and so fully personalized that you feel that you know them. Not that you wold want to have any kind of up close and personal relationship with many of them. There are some that I would avoid like the plague if I had the chance. Yes, I’m looking at you, Boom.
I think you would love this book. Knowing that it is #ComedyBookWeek it would be the perfect time to pick it up and shake your head and laugh.
I can honestly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the legal profession, or just likes court room insider information. Then it is a comedy, so if you like good humor, I would recommend it as well. I would caution, however, don’t get any foolish ideas from Donny. He is one crazy cheapskate.
