Maybe it is just me, but there is something just so deliciously inviting about a Mystery. Especially when it includes a scavenger type hunt. This delightful mystery is that style of book and it is wonderfully well written. There is no graphic violence or romance of any type. It is very Agatha Chrisy in its presentation. The entire story consists of two men searching for clues, second guessing every poetic hint.
This the audiobook is really a fun one. We first are introduced to Lord Alfred Willoughby, as he is sick and calls in his attorney for a change in the will. As to what that change is, we are not privy to that information. What we do know is that Lord Alfred Willoughby dies in the next paragraph and then we are allowed to meet the main characters of the book. Matthew, the lazy shiftless and unacceptable son is called to his father’s house for the reading of the will. There is a will,l but it is not on paper, It is a video, complete with recently deceased Alfred issuing a challenge.
Matthew Willoughby, as we keep learning, has not lived up to the expectations of his father Lord Alfred Willoughby. His selfishness and his immaturity shine through this story.
The book is filled with interesting and somewhat secretive characters. Of course, I suspect everyone if there is a mystery afoot. The side characters are well developed and have a tasty nastiness if not downright snarky way about them.
Cryptic Lines is my first book written by Richard Storry. I enjoy the way he writes. He uses words that evoke emotion that go along with the mysterious old mansion and the out of the way corridors they keep searching through. The clues are tied to a love of the classics that Lord Alfred cherishes. It was well written and entertaining to follow them in their puzzle solving. the two men work furiously because “gasp” there is a time limit on this treasure hunt. The way the book has been created there are light moments that show this is meant to be enjoyed. It is not a terror filled book, it is just a puzzle. A puzzle with a fabulous prize attached.
Now we can discuss the narration. If you haven’t noticed, I have taken a shine to a wonderful narrator with a brilliant voice. Of course, it helps that this divine voice is British. I am talking about Jake Urry. He came across my radar almost a month ago and I can’t tell you how much I love the cadence and character of his voice.
Jake Urry has presented this story in the best voices. Each person is distinct and obviously different from the others. I keep forgetting there is only one person reading this book. His voice is strong yet when he does the elderly woman Meg, I hear an elderly woman. It is a craft he is well adept at.
This is a really great book. Nicely written and narrated ever so nicely.
