    My Review:

This book was a delightful read. The suspense and mystery of a wonderful gothic style novel combined with characters of a more modern time. I loved that there were horses and automobiles at the same time. A period that reflected the growth of machinery. It had interesting and complex characters that told the story well. I loved the formality of the language and the class differentiation. My first Marie Silk book, but I certainly plan on visiting Davenport house again to see the people that are starting out a new phase of life.

Mary is a twenty-two-year-old woman that is struggling to find her place after the sudden death of her father. She has suspicions and questions and no one wants to provide any answers. Her maid Clara is a bit testy and brings a bitterness to the house that I rather enjoyed. The new maid Abigail entered during all the turmoil and gave us someone to wonder about. Mary is such an all around character. Smart, fun and really gentle hearted. These three characters made up an impressive group of women along with Mary’s dear friend Nellie. William, Ethan, the staff made the book fun as well. There are always deep rooted secrets hiding in a house like this. I look forward to book two where we go searching around in this forty-room house for more adventures.
