My Review:

When I started reading Creating Character Arcs by K. M. Weiland, I realized I had a lot to learn about the subject. I dove in and started seeing how having these defined arcs assist the story in a way that I, as a pantser, had not considered.

Knowing in advance that the characters will change and you alone can bring that clearly into being with your writing. That the midpoint should be a pivotal point in the characters evolution will smooth that transition along, giving you the opportunity to focus on certain questions that Ms. Weiland points out. Questions that once again will push your character and story along in a clearer direction.

As I continued to read I was able to grasp the conflict that I had been told my WIP missed. It brought it clearly to me that my characters need a low point to appreciate and grow. Not just in a mystery or a thriller, but in all books, there has to be a low point. Take the time to go back and take a look at the arc and see if you have chosen the strongest possible option. Point taken Ms. Weiland.

This is a book I will keep close, there is a lot of information and instruction in this book and I will be using it from here on out. This has opened a door into a more complex and better-plotted story in the future. It has allowed me to see what was lacking in my own work and how to repair that deficit before it goes to print.

My Recommendation:

If you are a writer and you want to take it to a higher level, then this book will certainly get you there. It is packed with great step by step instruction and explanations so that it becomes clear as to how character arcs work to your benefit. I can’t recommend it strongly enough.
