My Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
It is Mystery Thriller Week and I did have a certain type of book I was hoping to find in my book grab for reviews. Oh, It was like hitting the ebook lottery for me. I sought out books that had blurbs that called to me. One of the very first ones was a catchy title called. The Mad Hatter. It drew all sorts of connections for me. Alice, mad as a hatter phrase, and Johnny Depp. I was sold, I zipped off an email asking if I could read and review this thriller for the event. I was thrilled when I was told, yes!
This is the telling of another murderer. Not the one we have all heard of that terrorized White Chapel. This one is a different character altogether.
The first thing I noticed was the historical accuracy of the setting. This is the telling of another murderer. Not the one we have all heard of that terrorized White Chapel. This one is a different character altogether. The fact that this story was taking place in the same burg in the same time frame as another well known and feared serial killer was exciting in itself, but to have the two stories running parallel was wonderful.
The way that Yvonne Mason writes, it is like living in the neighborhood at the time of the events. There are not heavy conversational pages, it is full of the atmosphere of the story, and the activities of the story. I loved being taken back into this era.
It is not written with an overdose of telling over showing, it is however written in a manner that brings you in on all that is going on with all the concerned parties. You feel the activities. There are some pretty heinous events going on at the time, but the book is not a bloodbath. There are necessary details, but I found I was not turned away by them. They allowed me to see the depravity of the murderer’s acts. The details express the terror and the horror of the events without feeling the need for a shower after a scene.
I can not recommend this book enough. The characters and the tale are remarkable. Chilling, accurate, and completely consuming.
I am posting this review during Mystery Thriller Week. The annual event to celebrate mystery and thriller authors, bloggers, and fans.
