My Review:

Another environmental disaster book by H. W. “Buzz” Bernard that kept me glued to my kindle all night long. It is well written and kept me wondering how much could one area stand. As a southerner, I understood the impact of this blizzard.

This book really was adventurous and kept me entertained and physically cold all while reading. The feeling of this disaster was so well told and so aptly described I truly was pulled into the realism of the storm.

There are sub-plots going on that are just as interesting as the storm. The dynamic between employer and employee comes into play in several of these subplots and added a deeper dimension to the story.

This was my second book by H.W. Buzz Bernard and I found this one just as entertaining and thrilling as the first, Cascadia. I might have read them in reverse order it did nothing to ruin the experience. The story telling was superb and I find that I really enjoy the way that Buzz Bernard writes. He keeps you guessing about some things while laying out every event on a straight and calculated path. Taking you through each hair-raising or chill bump causing activity.

With my keen eye and thriller focused mind, I was able to find a delicious easter egg that made me laugh out loud. It was cleverly placed in a most unexpected situation. I loved it.  I do not always find one but I was quite pleased that I stumbled upon this one.  What a fun thing for Mr. Bernard to do.

I became curious about the heart and mind of the characters as they wound their way into a blizzard. The decisions that were made and the reasons gave me quite a lot to think about as I read.  Deep thinking while reading is a pleasant way to spend an evening. It does slow down the reading, but you find yourself getting more out of the story by understanding or attempting to understand the characters.  A lot of interesting questions and a lot of soul searching for my own answers.  More than I expected from a disaster book.

I am posting this review during Mystery Thriller Week and was provided a copy by the publishers through NetGalley in order to provide an honest review for this annual event.

I can’t recommend this book enough. It is well laid out, well planned and then a blizzard arrives. Nothing is quite the same after those first few tiny snowflakes.

Where can you find: Blizzard:

This environmentally explosive thriller is available in paperback and on Kindle at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Mystery Thriller Week Book Review: The Praying Nun – A Slave Shipwreck Saga by Michael Smorenburg

The Praying Nun - A Slave Shipwreck SagaThe Praying Nun – A Slave Shipwreck Saga by Michael Smorenburg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book in the one sitting. It was so well told and so energetic from the very first sentence throughout. There is a beauty in the story. The beauty of being underwater, seeing something that just can’t be. The beauty of the fear of running out of oxygen. All beautifully told and yet, I was sitting on the edge of my seat as they raced against air loss and powerful storms.

The first part of this two-part book deals with modern times and the search for treasures and artifacts on the ocean floor in the oceans off of South Africa. Jacques and his friend are diving for wreckage when they both discover something unusual. From that moment on, it was a race against time, the military, and the government.

The second part tells the perilous journey that slaves were taken on with no free will of their own and no consideration for their safety. Meeting the ones that in the days of slave traders take a ship full of humans and sail into dangerous water.

This is a book that anyone that loves treasures, history, and adventure needs to read. A great quick read.
