My Review:

Take a Load off, Mona Jamborski is such an unusual book. At first, I was sad for the memories that surround Mona as she faces the fact that she is 528 pounds and is locked into her apartment overweight and solitary.

Through these hopscotching memories, we see how she came about her current situation. Not written to elicit pity as much as it is to give us a simple understanding of Mona and her almost deadly current lifestyle. We see how she imagines her mental relationships with the people that pass through her life, unseen and unconnected to her.

Every day the same and organized to accommodate her, when an unexpected person steps into her life it opens her world up into possibilities. It is a worthy book, it is touching, and sometimes unnervingly honest and frank. To me, that brings in a realism and a bit of concern over her unhealthy life. I resonated about the way pain can be muffled by eating and this book makes me more aware of the chances for obsession over the slights in life.

When Mona found the situation out of her hands, she had to decide if she was willing to trust people and make changes in her life.

The narration was lovely. The voices were distinct and narrator Kris Keppler brought out Mona’s charming personality to light. In lilting prose, you took to Mona. You saw past her surly clipped tone and found the real Mona hiding inside.

The energy of the different characters was engaging and I can recommend this book and audiobook highly. It was well told, humorously peppered while bringing in strong personalities. The side characters were just as well written as the main and the people that were introduced carried the story along in a hopeful and colorful manner.
