Recap of the Indie Author Day Event on Facebook

Let me start by saying that when I first heard of the event I was immediately interested. What a wonderful way to meet other indie authors and learn from them. As an author of an indie publication, the marketing for the book falls on my doorstep.  I can use all the help I can get.

The day started at Midnight EST and I stayed up until 5:30 so that I could support the other authors and make sure they were not alone.  That was the number one fear. That no one would show up for the hour.  It was great to actually see how many readers and writers showed up for each hour.

The questions were interesting and extremely thought provoking. So many people asked for advice on publishing and writing. As an indie author, that is a huge question. Everyone has their own writing schedule and timetable, so it was so enlightening to see how others plan out their writing day.

Book Blurb:

When Faith Carson wakes up on a hospital ceiling looking down on her body in a coma, it’s a bad start to the week. A very bad start. She has no idea who she is or how she got there or why, and the biggest mystery of all is why she married the schmuck who wants her ventilator switched off.

As if that’s not enough Faith has a dead gran haunting her, a young daughter missing her, and one devilishly delicious man making her wish she could have a second chance at life. And maybe she can, if she finds a way back into her body and wakes up by Friday. But if she doesn’t, this will be her last bad week—ever.

Nate Sutherland decided long ago he’d settle for friendship if he couldn’t have Faith’s heart. But now, as she nears death, he’s going to have to listen to his feelings in a whole new way—and act. Because if he doesn’t, this week will be the worst damn week of his life. He’ll lose everything he’s ever loved.

(This book is intended for readers aged 18+.)

About Maggie Le Page:

SONY DSC

Maggie Le Page lives in Christchurch, New Zealand (aka QuakeZone) with her partner, two children, and a snooty cat who thinks they’re all her slaves. Her days are spent running around after kids or doing one of her ‘real’ jobs, so her writing generally happens in the dead of night. (Morning? Ha! She’s a third-generation night owl. Enough said.)

Maggie loves chocolate, hates being cold, and is ever fascinated by the possibility of time travel. Obviously, her ideal experience would be to wake up on a tropical island eighty years into the future, with an endless supply of chocolate on hand.

***Latest News!***
Maggie’s second book, The Trouble With Dying, was awarded an Honorable Mention in the InD’Tale 2015 RONE Awards (Suspense category).

My Review:

After reading one book last week  by Maggie Le Page and loving it, I decided I wanted to read another. With #ComedyBookWeek in full swing, I did pick up another book by her and wow. I was taken to places I had never been before, and I loved the journey. There was not falling down laughs, but there was so much humor and so much just emotion. The story if filled with spirits that are not sure what they are supposed to do other than just watch her comatose body. The fact that Faith calls the body in the hospital bed breathing with the aid of a machine, Faith -in – the -bed. I smiled and chuckled each time I saw it.
She only knows her name is Faith, because she was called it by the man that makes her spirit react even from across the room. . She accepted that having no memory of her life was like a jigsaw puzzle. She just had to put those pieces together as best she can.

I loved the characters. Tess was adorable and acted exactly like an intelligent six year old would. But there is more to Tess that meets the eye. Nate was faithful to come in day and night and sit with the Faith – in -the -bed and talk to her. Keeping her tethered to this world.

Maggie Le Page has a real way with words. She knows just how to use the ones that are quirky and trip off your tongue in a delightful manner. I found myself repeating some of her phrases and words just to hear them out loud.

Well written and good solid mystery kept me totally involved and engaged. It seemed to Faith, that there were villains around every corner. Villains that were free to come and go into her hospital room. The best character kept popping in and out. That was her dead grandmother, Gran. She kept things moving along in a less paranoid way. She also brought in some creepy guests.

Recommendation:

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves funny, mysterious, and lovable characters. It was so entertaining and had such a lovely spirit. There was some heat in the middle that I thought was perfectly timed for the couple.

#ComedyBookWeek: Book Review: Beaver vs. Beaver: by Portia Porter

humor_book

This last minute  addition to the #ComedyBookWeek reviews features. This is a new Legal Comedy by Portia Porter. I was happy to have been given a copy for review. This is book 1 in the Family Court Series. If you can go by this first book, there is a lot of humor in the legal profession and in the courtrooms of South Duck.

Book Blurb:

Portia Porter has struck out on her own and landed her first big client: a millionaire many times over who needs a divorce. But as the billable hours and expenses mount, Portia is learning first hand how hard it is to get a client to pay if they don’t want to.

Will her tiny firm crumble under the weight of his unpaid bills? Or might the confusion and expense of switching lawyers be the leverage she needs to finally get paid?

With a biting wit, endearing characters, and a story that will leave you reeling, Beaver vs. Beaver is the quintessential legal comedy.

For law students, pre-law, young lawyers with a solo practice, and anybody who enjoys laughing at lawyers . . . I mean, legal comedy.

(a version of this story first appeared in “Can You Stiff Your Divorce Lawyer? Tales of How Cunning Clients Can Get Free Legal Work.”)

About the Author:      Portia the Author

Portia Porter obtained her Ph.D. from The University of Chicago, a law degree from The University of Virginia, and practiced corporate and antitrust law with a top New York Wall Street law firm before opening her own divorce law practice. She practiced divorce law for about fifteen years before finally saying to herself: “You can’t divorce them all!”

If you have a divorce-related question that you are afraid to own up to, Portia is the one you should ask.

Portia lives in Ducklingburg, South Duck.

My Review:

Beaver vs. Beaver is such an unusual book. The story follows a new attorney on her first Divorce case. Portia Porter is hired as the Husband’s lawyer. He basically just wants to come out of the marriage financially unscathed.Portia Porter has a very unique voice in her writing. She comes from the legal field and still she tells these stories in such a personable and fetching way

I never would have imagined that there could be such legal wrangling and underhanded maneuvering. This book had me laughing, feeling bad for Portia and her crack team, Raccoon and Hoppy,  and shaking my head at what all she had to go through.

All this takes place in Ducklingburg, South Duck. There are accents, accusations, gossip mongers, and one Judge that I would not want to face.

The writing is so well done. In reading about this case you just know Portia wants to pull her hair out, but it might cost too much to repair. I kept laughing at the pictures she paints in this retelling of the events. Some of the events are just so funny and kind of mean spirited. I know I did not like opposing counsel.

Each character in this story is richly described and so fully personalized that you feel that you know them. Not that you wold want to have any kind of up close and personal relationship with many of them.  There are some that I would avoid like the plague if I had the chance. Yes,  I’m looking at you, Boom.

I think you would love this book. Knowing that it is #ComedyBookWeek it would be the perfect time to pick it up and shake your head and laugh.

Recommendation:

I can honestly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the legal profession, or just likes court room insider information. Then it is a comedy, so if you like good humor, I would recommend it as well.  I  would caution, however, don’t get any foolish ideas from Donny. He is one crazy cheapskate.
